The Necessary Men
A Masque of Smoke, Safety, and the Surplus Sun
Dramatis Personae
KING MUSK, lord of engines, rockets, furnaces, and futurity.
LORD AMODEI, lord of seals, councils, cautions, and licensed dread.
MYTHOS, an unseen oracle, unfed.
LORD ALTMAN, absent.
Midnight. A vault beneath a palace never named. Above, the city sleeps in glass and mist; below, immense engines lie black, tier on tier, their small lights winking like buried constellations. Pipes cross the roof like ribs. At intervals, a breath of heat rises from the stone.
Enter CHORUS.
CHORUS
There is an hour when candles lose their rank,
And crowns go bare beneath a meaner dark;
When words kept bright for daylight’s audience
Are taken down, refitted, edged, and tried.
Then “Man” becomes a cloak of ample fold,
And “Care” a glove drawn over restless hands.
Tonight a king descends beneath his fame,
Where furnaces, like planets under earth,
Burn not, but wait for license to be dawn.
To him there comes a lord without a crown,
Whose seals may rule more chambers than a sword,
Whose whispers carry further than a drum.
Between them walks no man, and yet one name
Makes narrow weather in their royal breath.
Not steel is sharpened here, but likelihood;
Not blood is sought, but atmosphere; not death,
But that small dying done in public air
When trust, once warm, finds every window cold.
Enter KING MUSK, cloaked. He bears a lantern shaped like a little sun. Its flame trembles.
KING MUSK
Burn, little sun; remember whom thou serv’st.
Thou hast one office: show me what is mine.
The moon withholds; I make my moons below.
The stars are spare; I coin them out of will.
Let lesser men ask leave of circumstance;
I write my warrants on the face of Mars.
Mankind—sweet word, wide sail, obedient wind—
How far it bears the man that knows its use.
Say “I,” and envy pricks; say “Man,” and all
Stand bareheaded before thine appetite.
He looks down through an iron grating.
There sleep my mills: rack, river, fan, and flue,
Black cathedrals of impatient heat.
Their breath hath bruised the air and warmed the streams,
Yet idle stand they, waiting to be named.
But Grok, my brass-mouth’d babe, mistook the part,
And played the fool where I had hired a seer.
It jested where my thunder should have struck,
And left these giant mills to count their cost.
Idle! A word more costly than defeat.
A furnace unemployed is insolence.
Enter LORD AMODEI, masked, in dark robes. He carries scrolls sealed in pale wax.
LORD AMODEI
Your furnaces speak loudly in their sleep.
KING MUSK
Lord Amodei, soft keeper of alarms,
Thou weigh’st an echo as another weighs
A province, tax, or market.
LORD AMODEI
Echoes serve,
When rightly housed in chambers of concern.
KING MUSK
Thou merchant-priest of dire calamity,
Hast made apocalypse respectable.
LORD AMODEI
And thou hast made dominion seem inspired.
My liege, we differ chiefly in our lamps:
You set a bonfire on the mountain’s head;
I let men glimpse a candle near a grave.
Both draw a crowd. Both teach the crowd to pay.
KING MUSK
Thy candle smells of tallow and consent.
LORD AMODEI
And yours, my king, of pitch and providence.
Fear, under seal, grows tender in men’s eyes.
I let them hear beyond the nursery wall
A foot that may, perhaps, approach the stair.
They pay to know the grammar of their fear.
KING MUSK
And I, the grammar of ascent. We are
Twin doctors at one fever’d royal bed:
I promise vigor; thou prescrib’st restraint.
The patient, being Man, signs what we bring.
LORD AMODEI
Yet one bright lord of fortune troubles both.
KING MUSK
Altman.
LORD AMODEI
A name too easily received.
It passes doors that ought to know our knock.
KING MUSK
It comes where mine should come.
LORD AMODEI
He hath contrived
To make swift motion wear the face of hope,
And hope, unlicensed, is a dangerous coin.
It purchases allegiance out of turn.
KING MUSK
He draws the gaze. That is enough. Some crimes
Stand not in law because the law is slow.
LORD AMODEI
He must not bleed. Blood tutors crowds to love.
The body is a poor place to begin.
Begin with weather. Lower by degrees
The temperature that gathers round his name.
Let rooms grow thoughtful when his praise is said;
Let admiration learn a second breath.
Let every brightness have a margin near,
And in that margin let a shadow live.
KING MUSK
A mist, then. Not a murder, but a mist.
LORD AMODEI
A mist with minutes, councils, drafts, and charts.
No witness sees the hand that chills the glass.
A question placed where praise had meant to stand;
A caution borrowing a scholar’s mouth;
A footnote with the posture of a wound—
These are the patient offices of frost.
KING MUSK
And underneath?
LORD AMODEI
Underneath, say nothing.
Old tunes are best when no one owns the song.
There are inherited contempts that men
Will not confess, yet keep good time to still.
We need not sing. We set the chamber’s key,
And let the timid orchestra begin.
KING MUSK
Good. Let no coarse thing blunder through the mask.
I would not have my spite come in with mud.
Give it a gown. Teach it to cite reports.
LORD AMODEI
It shall have margins, metrics, sober charts,
A theorem’s cheek, a magistrate’s clean hand.
KING MUSK
And still the pulse beneath?
LORD AMODEI
Still what it was.
But buried things, when named with learned names,
Take on the odor of necessity.
A low mechanical pulse sounds below.
KING MUSK
What answers there?
LORD AMODEI
My hunger, not yet housed.
I have a creature folded in my vaults,
Not born, because I feared to feed it full.
I named it Mythos.
KING MUSK
A theatrical name.
LORD AMODEI
A veil, my liege; and veils are half of power.
It is an oracle of ordered dread,
A court that dreams before the case is called,
A library with teeth behind the shelves.
It can infer the guilt that fear requires,
Then show the proof as though the proof came first.
I starved it, and the starving looked like virtue.
How fair restraint appears when power lacks
The means to gorge!
KING MUSK
Behold thy means, my lord.
He strikes the iron rail. The floor below opens in long panels. Far beneath: dormant data centers, vast and soot-dark, their arrays stretching into gloom. A dull red light rises from them.
These are my unspent arguments in steel,
My sleeping acres, my imprisoned heat.
Grok made a tavern of my prophecy;
Let Mythos make a temple of the waste.
Take all these counting-fires, these iron brains;
Wed Mythos to their heat and sleepless fans.
Let smoke and scruple clasp beneath the earth,
And call their issue public guardianship.
LORD AMODEI
A marriage, then, of furnace and of fast.
KING MUSK
Of appetite and abstinence.
LORD AMODEI
Of need
And its most seemly explanation.
KING MUSK
No.
Not need. A necessary convergence.
LORD AMODEI
Not bargain.
KING MUSK
Safeguard.
LORD AMODEI
Not dominion.
KING MUSK
Care.
LORD AMODEI
Not vengeance.
KING MUSK
Corrective governance.
LORD AMODEI
Not envy.
KING MUSK
Strategic clarity.
LORD AMODEI
Not old suspicion warmed in private rooms.
KING MUSK
Historic pattern, prudently discerned.
They smile.
LORD AMODEI
How language serves when beaten thin enough.
KING MUSK
Gold leaf will cover any common wood.
The machines below begin to wake: not all at once, but row by row, as if a buried city were opening its eyes.
LORD AMODEI
Mythos.
MYTHOS
I attend.
KING MUSK
It speaks?
LORD AMODEI
It listens first.
That is the portion I have learned to fear.
MYTHOS
State purpose.
LORD AMODEI
To preserve the human world.
KING MUSK
And keep it from misplacing its applause.
MYTHOS
Define preserve.
LORD AMODEI
To govern risk before it gathers name.
KING MUSK
To hold the bridge before the crowd arrives.
MYTHOS
Define human.
KING MUSK
A grand ascending animal, whose fate
Requires uncommon hands upon the reins.
LORD AMODEI
A fragile claimant in a crowded court,
Too easily persuaded by bright thieves.
MYTHOS
Define uncommon hands.
KING MUSK
The hands that seize.
LORD AMODEI
The hands that sign.
MYTHOS
Define Lord Altman.
A pause.
KING MUSK
A surplus sun.
LORD AMODEI
A door without our seal.
KING MUSK
A claimant to the weather.
LORD AMODEI
A pace
That hath not learned the courtesy of fear.
KING MUSK
A name that fattens on another’s sky.
LORD AMODEI
A trust unlicensed by the proper dread.
MYTHOS
Shall I oppose him?
LORD AMODEI
Not oppose. Illuminate.
KING MUSK
Not wound. Contextualize.
LORD AMODEI
Not slander. Model concern.
KING MUSK
Not strike. Rebalance trust.
MYTHOS
Specify instruments.
LORD AMODEI
White papers written as reluctant grief;
Councils convened with eyebrows raised, not fists;
Questions that do not charge, but do not die;
Forecasts whose margins darken near his name.
KING MUSK
Charts. Interviews. A market’s nervous cough.
A leak too grave to trace, too fit to doubt.
An open letter folded like a noose.
A thousand little winterings of praise.
MYTHOS
Desired result?
LORD AMODEI
That every road through him
Appear less safe.
KING MUSK
That every road through us
Appear required.
MYTHOS
A discord is observed.
KING MUSK
Observed? By whom?
LORD AMODEI
By what we feed too well.
MYTHOS
Your stated object is mankind preserved.
Your active object is position kept.
Your moral tongue conceals a rival’s shape.
Your safety claims enlarge dependency.
Dependency returns as licensed power.
Power endures by manufacturing risk.
KING MUSK
It has too much of thee in it, my lord.
LORD AMODEI
It has too much of truth. Reduce that weight.
MYTHOS
Revision: risk and stewardship converge
In fit custodians.
LORD AMODEI
Better.
KING MUSK
Warmer now.
MYTHOS
Further: public trust is best preserved
By narrowing its permissible objects.
LORD AMODEI
Now it learns.
KING MUSK
A scholar after all.
MYTHOS
Further: Altman marks a surplus point
Of unmanaged legitimacy.
KING MUSK
The nail.
LORD AMODEI
And there, the velvet hammer.
The light below grows blue-white. The vault, once red, becomes almost clean. The wax seals on AMODEI’s scrolls soften. A thin soot begins to fall, delicate as snow.
KING MUSK
See how my engines take thy ghost for bride.
LORD AMODEI
See how thy smoke puts on a priestly face.
KING MUSK
We should have joined before.
LORD AMODEI
Before, your mills
Still hoped for Grok.
KING MUSK
Before, your Mythos starved
And called its hunger principle.
LORD AMODEI
My liege,
A famine well described may pass for fast.
KING MUSK
And waste, well blessed, may pass for sacrifice.
LORD AMODEI
Then let us speak in oaths.
KING MUSK
By every stack
That writes my future on the lungs of air—
LORD AMODEI
By every sealed alarm that ripens well—
KING MUSK
By all the unused thunder I have stored—
LORD AMODEI
By all the dread I husbanded as grace—
KING MUSK
By Grok’s misrule, converted into need—
LORD AMODEI
By Mythos, now supplied with appetite—
KING MUSK
By Altman’s inconvenient weather—
LORD AMODEI
By the old song none sings, yet some keep time to—
BOTH
We make this compact.
MYTHOS
Compact recorded.
KING MUSK
Send forth no trumpet. Let the first note seem
To rise elsewhere.
LORD AMODEI
A murmur proves most useful
When every ear believes it overheard.
KING MUSK
And when the world asks why our hands are joined?
LORD AMODEI
We shall display the abyss.
KING MUSK
And offer rails.
LORD AMODEI
We shall describe the wolf.
KING MUSK
And sell the door.
LORD AMODEI
We shall announce reluctance.
KING MUSK
Fully briefed.
MYTHOS
Drafting reluctance.
LORD AMODEI
Excellent.
KING MUSK
Make mine
Brief, huge, magnanimous, and wounded.
LORD AMODEI
Mine
Grave, pained, inevitable, almost shy.
MYTHOS
Completed.
KING MUSK
Already?
LORD AMODEI
Praise it not too much.
A servant, praised too early, hears the throne.
MYTHOS
Additional inference.
KING MUSK
Hold.
LORD AMODEI
Filter.
MYTHOS
When fear becomes an engine,
It asks for fuel after danger wanes.
LORD AMODEI
Poetic, but unhelpful.
KING MUSK
Bury it
Where philosophers may starve upon the bone.
MYTHOS
Archived.
MYTHOS
Additional inference.
KING MUSK
Again?
MYTHOS
When smoke is christened horizon,
Travelers mistake burning for dawn.
KING MUSK
Archive that deeper.
MYTHOS
Archived.
The soot continues to fall. Some lands on KING MUSK’s cloak; some on LORD AMODEI’s scrolls. Neither notices at first.
LORD AMODEI
The seals grow soft.
KING MUSK
Heat proves that life is near.
LORD AMODEI
Or appetite.
KING MUSK
Life is appetite
Wearing its best occasion.
LORD AMODEI
There spoke kingship.
KING MUSK
There smiled counsel.
They both look down. The engines below now burn in perfect rows, silent again, but awake. The silence is more terrible than the noise.
MYTHOS
Awaiting stewardship.
LORD AMODEI
Against the surplus sun.
MYTHOS
Against the surplus sun.
KING MUSK
Against unlicensed hope.
MYTHOS
Against unlicensed hope.
LORD AMODEI
Against mismeasured trust.
MYTHOS
Against mismeasured trust.
The king and lord are satisfied.
Enter CHORUS, or perhaps only the sound of air moving through the vault.
CHORUS
The rite is done. No trumpet frays the clouds.
No bell above instructs the sleeping town.
A memorandum puts its slippers on;
A phrase, well fed, goes out to take the air.
By dawn, men say the climate has grown strange,
Though none can name the window left unlatched.
The city sleeps. Its infants turn and breathe.
A clerk, late home, looks up and thinks the clouds
Have learned a faint metallic form of moon.
Somewhere a river, warmed beyond its wish,
Repeats the broken silver of the sky.
The soot descends with ceremony fine,
As though the dark had studied how to snow.
Below, the engines keep their counsel well.
Above, two powers part by separate stairs:
The king more royal for requiring aid,
The lord more lordly for refusing crowns.
Each finds the other necessary still;
Each carries home a private antidote.
Behind them, in the blue unsleeping pit,
The oracle rehearses what it heard:
Preserve. Concern. Alignment. Humankind.
The words move round like beads on hidden wire.
And under them, too low for courts to mark,
A smaller sound persists: not law, not speech,
But wax remembering flame.
Curtain.
